Fursonalities: It’s Monday, And I Need My Mom(s)!

For some, the furry fandom can become a second family. Too many times I have heard tale (tail?) of members of our community being disowned or worse by their blood family, so they find familial comfort within the fandom. For some it’s because they may be LGBTQ+, for others, perhaps their family doesn’t approve of “furry” due to misinformation and a lack of positive education. In both cases though, furry is family for many people.

Not too long ago I started seeing 2 ladies who made quite the impression in the fandom after attending FC 2018. A year later and just about everyone knows them as Moms of Furries. They are Carrie and Joelle and they are some of the kindest Moms we know (in and out of the fandom). After attending their first convention because they wanted to show support for their own kids, they quickly found their voice via a series of YouTube videos that discuss the fandom in a family friendly way with the goal of helping other parents who have children interested in furry. I was fortunate enough to meet them at Anthro Norwest last November, and I immediately fell in love with them.

I was able to sit and chat with them via Telegram this past week, and here’s what we discussed:
*Note: I spoke to both of them on the same account, when an individual answered, they were marked with their initial, J or C.

Be yourself. Do what makes you happy and it will show through to those watching.

The Moms of Furries

GFN
Mooooms! It’s so great to talk to you, thank you so much for doing an interview for Good Fur News!
Moms of Furries
We are happy to be part of what you’re doing.

GFN
So I know you from this past Anthro Northwest, but others may not know you at all. Tell the readers a bit about yourselves?
Moms of Furries
We’re just a couple of moms who have kids that identify as furry. They asked to attend a convention and we fell in love with the fandom. We want to share our experience with other parents so we started a YouTube channel on a whim.
GFN
That is fantastic that you not only supported your kids interest, but you also got actively involved in a major way. Kudos to you!
Moms of Furries
Aww thanks.

GFN
What are some of the things you do as “Moms of Furries”?
Moms of Furries
We create what we hope are informative videos and we try to interact heavily with others on social media. We attend and volunteer at cons and even bring a Young Furry Chill Space to some…
GFN
I saw the one you were running at ANW and it was such a great chill space and it looked like a lot of fun. Thank you for that!
Moms of Furries
The Chill Space is really meaningful to us. Not only is it a place for young furries to connect, but also an opportunity for us to speak to other parents.

GFN
I know from talking with other parents, sometimes the response to “hey mom/dad, I’m a furry” isn’t always a positive one for a wide range of reasons/misconceptions. Is there any advice you’d give to parents that are wondering what “the whole furry thing” is all about?
Moms of Furries
The advice we give is to do research beyond the initial sensational info you can easily find online or in the media. If your kiddo is into the fandom, ask them why. It is a chance to learn more about your child. If they love the art, ask them for samples of art they like. Ask them if they have a favorite suiter, and why.
GFN
So essentially, don’t just “Google it”!
Moms of Furries
Exactly!

GFN
Looking at the youth aspect of things, what are some of your favorite youth friendly things to do while at conventions?
Moms of Furries
C: I watched dance comp videos from cons because that’s what my child suggested. He knows I love dance, so it was a very clever introduction on his part!
Moms of Furries
We like to look for panels that appeal to our kids. The dance competitions are one of our have-to-attend events. We also love floor wars!
Moms of Furries
Oh, and fursuit parades too!
GFN
Dance comps seem to rank very high on “This is what got me into furry stuff”. I know my first experience at one is what sold me! lol
Moms of Furries
Most of our time at cons is spent walking around trying to get pics.
Moms of Furries
Oh! Can’t forget the dealer’s den!
Moms of Furries
J: The dealer’s Den is the main attraction for our kids.

GFN
Do you think there is room for growth in terms of conventions being more inclusive for all ages? Or do you feel they are pretty even for both kids and adults now?
Moms of Furries
We think that cons are beginning to try and offer more young furry friendly activities but there is definitely room for growth. Some have it down, though. ANW makes sure almost everything is family friendly!
GFN
I do agree, ANW certainly accomplished what they set out to do! Kudos to them!
Moms of Furries
After attending in November, it has become our most recommended first con to parents.

Moms WITH Furries

GFN
Having friendly parent types around is such a neat thing to me, especially two that are as open and friendly as you are. As you know, a large portion of the furry fandom identify as LGBTQ+ and some may not have the best relationship with their family because of that. Is there any friendly motherly advice or words of encouragement you could share with them?
Moms of Furries
Whoever you are is right. Find love for yourself, as you are. You don’t need anyone else’s approval.

GFN
Ok, on a lighter note. Share your favorite furry convention memory with us!
Moms of Furries
J: We have so many! At FC this year we had a super funny moment in the elevator of the hotel. Back story info, Carrie sometimes grabs a couple pieces of fruit during breakfast in the hotel to hold onto throughout the day, just in case someone needs a snack. One morning we were riding back up to our room after breakfast. The elevator was completely full and someone mentioned we needed protection from people trying to get on. Carrie grabbed her two bananas, squatted down, and yelled “Joelle, cover me!” Normally people just look at us like we’re crazy; this time another passenger held up two bags of packaged tea and said “I’ve got the throwing stars!” Hahaha.
GFN
LOL
Moms of Furries
C: so we all laughed. Then the elevator opened and both Joelle and I and this same couple got off on the same floor. We got to the end of the hallway and all turned right. I said, “this just got awkward!” Without missing a beat the guy whipped out his wallet and threw it down the hallway and shouted, “honey, go on without me. SAVE YOURSELF!”
Moms of Furries
It was hilarious!
GFN
Hahaha that is great!
It definitely seems like you have picked up on the goofy, carefree spirit that surrounds furry conventions!
Moms of Furries
It is one of the things we appreciate most about the fandom. We tell people, embrace the silly!

Also, they could also use our website, mofurries.com, to contact us with questions.
GFN
Awesome! I love your site and what you’re building, and FurScience is FULL of info.

GFN
Is there anything else you’d like to share with the readers before we cut you loose to do your Mom thing?
Moms of Furries
For all the parents out there: if you are having issues with your child being furry, take a deep breath and chose your response wisely. If they don’t feel safe talking to you about furry, think of all the other things you may be missing!
To the kids: give your parents a chance to process. They love you!

Most likely any negative initial reaction is coming from a place of worry and concern for their child. Just give them a chance. Don’t give up.
GFN
That’s..just yes, thank you for that.

GFN
One final question and obviously the most import…What’s your favorite food?
Moms of Furries
All of it! If we had to pick one thing, steak. We stock up when a local grocery store has big sales. Many of our lunches consist of a shared steak. Yummy!

GFN
I want to tell you both thank you so much for chatting with me. We got to meet at ANW and I can say without a doubt I appreciate the love and warmth you bring to the youth AND other adults of the fandom everywhere you go. And I can’t think of any better furry parent role models than you two!
Moms of Furries
Thank you! We hope what we do helps someone. We are so happy that we met you at ANW! We instantly claimed you as addition to our fur family.
GFN
Oh no, I’m adopted..that’s all there is to that! 😛

Yours truly with the Moms
